Lookout/Site Warden Initial


This course is intended for candidates who wish to act as Lookout on Network Rail’s infrastructure. Re-certification is required every two years and consists of a one day classroom based course and assessment.

Course Aims

Upon successful completion of the course candidates will be able to:

• Carry out Lookout duties competently in accordance with the Rule Book and industry standards.

• Welcome & Introduction
• Duties of a COSS
• Introduction to Lookout/Site Warden duties
• Site Warden / Lookout’s Equipment
• Duties of Site Warden
• Duties of the Lookout
• Duties of on Track Plant
• Lookout operated warning systems (LOWS)
• Protection of the line when it becomes unsafe
• Theory Assessment
• Practical Assessments


PQMS Limited will upload the relevant competence outcome(s) and result(s) to the Sentinel system.


1 Day


• Must have sufficient command of the English language as detailed in Network Rail company specification NR/S/CTM/021.
• In date Medical screening uploaded to Sentinel.
• In date Drugs and Alcohol screening uploaded to Sentinel.
• Safety Helmet (Blue safety helmets must to be worn as per Network Rail PPE Policy even if the candidate has held PTS before)
• PPE, Hi Visibility Clothing (vest & trousers), to GO/RT3279 & NR/L2/OHS/021 standard
• Safety Boots, with full ankle & Mid Sole protection (Not Rigger Boots)
• Candidate must bring log book with at least 4 entries & 2 management reviews.
• Candidate must be minimum of 18 Years of age.
• Candidate must bring Photographic I.D.
• Before candidates attend this course they will need to have attended and successfully passed the personal track safety (PTS) course.
